50 Caliber Glock - The .50 GI (12.7×23mmRB) pistol cartridge was developed by Alex Zimmermann of Guncrafter Industries. The .50 GI was introduced at the 2004 SHOT Show as the Guncrafter Industries Model No. Next to the 1, a variant of the M1911. The round has a rim the same diameter as the .45 ACP.

In 2006, Guncrafter Industries introduced their Model 1911 #2 with a full-length light rail/dust guard and chambered for the .50 GI cartridge. Both the M1 and M2 can be equipped with the Guncrafter Industries .45 ACP conversion unit, the .45 ACP magazine holds 8 rounds.

Physically, the .50 GI round is wider than the .45 ACP and slightly longer. M1 and M2 magazines hold seven rounds. The Glock Converter holds eight rounds in the standard magazine and nine in the extended lower pad.

The .50 GI operates at pressures comparable to the .45 ACP, around 15,000 psi (100 MPa). Felt recoil is no different than the .45 ACP. The .50 GI has earned a reputation for accuracy, although this may be due to the high accuracy of the semi-custom, highly exclusive Guncrafter pistols themselves. In one test, a 300 Grain (19 g) Jacketed Flat Point (JFP) gave a group of 2.24 inches at 25 yards, and a 300 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) and 275 grain JHP gave a group of 2.14 at 25 yards. inches

The petrification (but not necessarily the kinetic energy) of 0.50 GI in gelatin is significantly different from 0.45 ACP.

Although it is one of the few examples of the largest caliber bullet legally allowed (.50) in a semi-automatic pistol, it was specially constructed to have significantly less recoil and kinetic energy than .50 caliber magnum cartridges such as the . 50. Action Express (semi-automatic) or .500 S&W Magnum (revolver). Factory loaded ammunition has a kinetic energy of about 500 ft·lb.

The cartridge is not used for law enforcement and rarely for self-defense, as ammunition and weapons are limited for the cartridges. Currently, the only commercially available guns in this caliber are Guncrafter Industries' own Colt 1911 pistol variants and their Glock 21/Glock 20 conversion receiver and Magnum Research chamber for their BFR revolver in this caliber. The title makes it sound like it. like the crazy rave of the ignorant prohibition movement, but .50 caliber Glocks are a reality. Guncrafter Industries makes conversion slides for the G21 and G41 to take the 50GI cartridge. The slides are a budget alternative to the $4000 long slide 1911, their Model 4. At $595-$660, this gets the shooter into the 50GI caliber for a little less than the 1911 route.

Ten rounds in a slightly extended magazine or nine rounds in the same flat, this conversion reduces the capacity for more rounds per shot. The theory behind this round is simple: why spend some of the kinetic energy expanding the projectile when you can fire it already expanded?

50GI is a low pressure caliber based on the classic Webley .455 models. At the same pressure as the 45ACP, it is easy on the shooter and gives just as fast follow-up shots, something not seen in the 50AE or 50S&W. Expanding ammo has a nominal range of 185g at 1200 fps to 275g at 875 fps, and 300g JSP is available for practice and piercing wildlife. At 700 fps, the 300g load is on the same power level as the 44 Special—a smooth, easy-to-shoot round that works well for quick second and third hits when needed. Expanding bullets are optimized for thin-skinned humanoid enemies, and the 230 grain makes holes a foot deep and nearly an inch wide. The light for the 185 gr stops at 9 inches, but makes an even wider path. Actual clocked velocities were very close to the 4.5 inch barrels and higher than the 5 inch to 6 inch barrels.

Full copper projectiles are quite effective at converting velocity into expansion without fragmenting or bending the petals in on themselves. Muzzle flash was minimal with all loads I tested (185, 230, 275 and 300).

As you can see, the slotted rim allows for a 45ACP size rear track. Magazines are easy to load with your fingers. Depending on the load, the degree of muzzle flip was minimal to mild, definitely on par with the 45ACP experience. The only downside to the Glock conversion compared to the excellent 1911 longslide was that it was slowed down. My 9-shot groups at 10 yards were about 2.25 inches, while the 1911, with its longer sight radius and better trigger, printed 7-shot groups within an inch. Again #4 on the long slide, the group size at ten meters was less than the extended bullet size. With Glocks, it wasn't as good, though the difference was probably more ergonomics than the mechanics of the devices.

Because 50GI ammo is expensive, shooters are supposed to train primarily with 45ACP caps that handle similarly and carry 50GI caps. Given the similarity of shooting experiences between the two calibers and the excellent reliability of the conversions, this is a valid approach. Unlike more energetic cartridges such as the 10mm Auto and 44Mag, the 50GI does not wear out the shooter in practice and protects unprotected hearing under subsonic loads.

Compared to stock Glock mags, the conversion leaves quite a bit of capacity, from 13+1 to 8+1. Each bullet increases forehead area by 22% both before and after expansion. The choice is yours. Is it worth taking nine harder hits before reloading or getting five more shots before a magnetic switch is needed?

As you can see, there are extended barrels available. Although they only add a small amount of speed, twisting the dampers is an option. While the 50GI is currently only available from Guncrafter Industries, several handloading recipes allow for even less common loads. Burnt brass can be reused many times.
