Fort Worth Area Code - Area codes 817 and 682 are North American Telephone Number (NANP) area codes for the state of Texas in the United States. The service area includes downtown Fort Worth and most of the western Metroplex. The 817 area code was created in 1953 largely from the 915 area code, which was one of the original 1947 codes.
The 1947 United States Census divided North Texas into two designated areas. The northwest section, from west of El Paso to the Texas Panhandle in the north and Fort Worth in the east, is assigned area code 915. Northeast Texas, from a line west of Dallas to Wacon, Arkansas, on the Louisiana border, was assigned the 214 area code.

In 1953, the 817 area code was established as a route from east of 915, near Abile, creating a designated area from central Texas to the Texoma border in the north. The available database does not show the exact boundaries, and it is possible that the 214th section was the western part of the city of Dallas.

After 915 was split in 1957 to create the sixth proposed area in Texas, NPA 806, the Texas code structure remained largely unchanged for four decades. Due to the rapid growth of the metroplex in the second half of the 20th century, 817 was finally reduced in size and split into three on July 25, 1997. The northern part, including Wichita Falls and Dton, was assigned the area code 940. to the south, including Waco, Temple, and Kille, became Area 254 in the census system.
It was intended to be a permanent solution, but within two years, 817 was once again lost due to the growth of telecommunications services in the Metroplex, especially the popularity of mobile devices. The area numbering system was reset on October 7, 2000 to a complex system with another area code of 682. Some areas (including the communities of Arlington, Bedford, Eulex, Grapevine, Southlake, and Colleyville) in eastern Tarrant County, generally around Dallas, included area codes 214 and 972, not 682 because 682 includes the Fort Worth metropolitan area. In the following sections, 817 mainly works with codes 214 and 972.
An April 2020 analysis of greenhouse gas emissions suggests a reduction of 682/817 by 2046, but earlier studies as of 2017 put the reduction between 2045 and 2049.
